“It’s a Continent”

File:African continent-en.svg

One of the biggest misconceptions of Africa is that there is much that applies to the whole continent.

Questions like “What language do they speak in Africa?” should be reframed.

Language

There are over 3,000 languages spoken in Africa.

Climate

It is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones, with climates ranging from tropical to subarctic.

The record high average temperature for an inhabited location on Earth is found in Dallol, Ethiopia,

Religion

Most Africans are Muslim or Christian, with a clear north-south divide. Traditional religions still hold sway and have influence on monotheistic practices. There are also sizable Hindu minorities in South Africa and in the African Great Lakes region.

Area and Population

Africa only ranks behind Asia in both categories. Africa encompasses 1/5 of the total land area of Earth.

Development, Politics and Economy

Thirty-four out of fifty-three African countries are among the world’s Least Developed Countries, making Africa the poorest and most underdeveloped continent.

In recent years, Africa has made a greater push toward democratic reforms and regional cooperation. One example is the African Union, which consists of all African nations except Morocco.

This is a rough and simple description of the whole African continent. I guess it is better if you can prepare a series of articles about some of the typical countries. And interviews with ordinary people will help a lot. And pictures.

    • Agreed. That’s the hope.

The project has just started. Anything you can do to help us accumulate content to share would be appreciated.

I’d be happy to write something on Burkina Faso, if it would help.

One of the most ignorant comments I’ve heard about Africa is the lions, tigers and bears. I believe tigers are in Asia and bears are in europe ( if there is any left there) and North America.
